While some women might feel self-conscious regarding the small size of their breasts, others might feel a need to reduce theirs to lessen the physical pain that is often associated with large, sagging breasts. Women with large breasts might feel that it is difficult to find clothes that fit properly, or simply dislike the size of them and wish for breasts that are smaller and lighter. Whatever the reason might be, breast reduction can rid you of excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin.
While you consider breast reduction surgery as a viable option for addressing your needs and aesthetic goals, you are likely also interested in learning how the procedure is performed. Below is a brief overview of the breast reduction procedure:
- Anesthesia: Of course, the first step in a breast reduction surgery is to administer medications for the comfort of the patient during reduction surgery. Options for this generally include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia.
- Incisions: There is also more than one way to make an incision during breast reduction surgery. One option is a circular pattern around the areola. A second option is a keyhole or racquet-shaped pattern with an incision around the areola that extends vertically down toward the breast crease. Lastly, an inverted T or anchor-shaped incision pattern can be made to perform this procedure.
- Removal of tissue and repositioning: After any of the aforementioned incisions are made, the nipple will need to be repositioned, though it will remain tethered to its original blood and nerve supply. For extremely large breasts, it is possible that the nipple and areola will need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position. If necessary, the size of the areola will also be reduced. Of course, the underlying breast tissue will be reduced.
- Closing the incisions: The final step in this procedure is to close the incisions. Sutures will be layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the patient’s newly shaped breasts while skin adhesives and surgical tape will be used to close the skin. Though the incision lines are permanent, they generally fade and significantly improve with time.
